Tom Sargent will be aiming to win his first car racing title when he heads to Wakefield Park for this weekend’s final round of the NSW Formula Ford Championship.

The Young driver holds a handy lead in the standings, having won the opening two rounds of the series at Sydney Motorsport Park. But Sargent is not taking anything for granted and is expecting the technical Wakefield Park circuit to be a brutal challenge for cars and drivers alike.

“We’re racing much later in the year than usual – normally, everything would be finished up by now, but it’s good to be making up for the racing we didn’t get to do earlier in the year,” Sargent said.

“The forecast suggests the weather won’t be overly warm this weekend, but even so, Wakefield Park is still physically demanding for the drivers and tough on the machinery.

“There are no straights, which means the brakes don’t have many chances to cool down and as a driver, there’s no time to rest.”

Sargent is 40 points clear of his nearest rival in the standings, but with a total of 93 points on offer across the weekend, he is not taking anything for granted.

“The way the points system is structured, it places an emphasis on consistency – all it would take is one DNF (did not finish) and it would allow the others to catch up, so we can’t afford any problems this weekend,” he said.

After a tough year for so many people, Sargent said a championship victory would be a nice way to finish off the season.

“We were planning to contend for the national title this season, but to win the state championship would still be a cool achievement after all the challenges of 2020; I haven’t won a car racing championship yet, so I’d love to tick that box,” Sargent concluded.
