Series leader Thomas Sargent set for Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge finale

Holding a 32-point margin heading to the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge finale at Phillip Island this weekend, Thomas Sargent is aiming to leave Australian racing on a high with the title victory.

Following a clean-sweep at Round 2 of the series at Queensland Raceway in August, Sargent has since sat atop of the standings, extending his lead to a season high margin at The Bend where key rival Ryan Wood encountered a mechanical problem.

Having never finished lower than second this season, Sargent has been a mark of consistency yet demonstrated class leading pace throughout his maiden campaign in Porsche’s second-tier series.

Phillip Island is a venue where Sargent has experienced recent success following a clean-sweep of victories in Formula Ford at the corresponding event last year.

Sargent is intent on delivering the title for the CHE Racing Team as he leaves Australian shores next season to contest the Porsche Carrera Cup North America Championship.

But before then, Sargent will contest three races at Phillip Island to decide the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge title headlining Victoria’s traditional season ending event, Island Magic.

“I’m pretty pumped on returning to Phillip Island, it’s up there as one of my favourite tracks in Australia,” said Sargent.

“It seems to suit my driving style, it’s a very fast and flowing layout, so I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve had great success there in the past and I’m excited to return.

“Carrera Cup hasn’t run around there since 2018, so everyone’s a bit short on data around Phillip Island and it will be interesting to see how everyone compares on car set-up and times.

“It’s been good to have someone pushing me all season and Ryan (Wood) thinks the exact same thing. It’s been good to have each other to push along and develop ourselves as drivers for later on in our careers. We’ve both been racing really hard and I feel like quite fairly across the season, so whichever way it goes after Phillip Island we’ve done a great job.”
