Eleven weeks on from Tom Sargent’s domination at Sydney Motorsport Park, the young CHE driver heads into round two of the Australian Formula Ford Championship with a 13 point lead.
Despite the sizeable gap between rounds, Sargent has remained busy behind the wheel with numerous starts in State level formula Ford rounds and a superb class victory in the Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour.
Last weekend, Sargent competed at Phillip Island in round three of the Victorian Formula Ford season where he picked up pole and two race wins to extend his state series points lead.
11 weeks on from Tom Sargent’s domination at Sydney Motorsport Park, the Young CHE driver heads into this weekend's second round of the Australian Formula Ford Championship at Wakefield Park with a 13 point lead.
“It was quite beneficial to go racing at Phillip Island last weekend and get some mileage under our belt in the Formula Ford again. It was useful going back through the motions of race starts and all the other procedures of a race event,” said Sargent.
In a stark contrast to both Sydney Motorsport Park and Phillip Island, Wakefield Park is just 2.2 kilometres long and has no particularly long straights to note.
“Qualifying will be a major priority as overtaking is going to be quite a bit trickier than it was in round one and even at Phillip Island last weekend in the state series. Without a long straight, slipstreaming won't be as much of a factor,” Sargent said.
Adding to the intrigue of Formula Ford in recent weeks was the announcement that Dick Johnson Racing will be offering a test drive in one of their Supercars for this year’s Australian Formula Ford Champion. As the current points leader, Sargent is keeping coy about his title chances.
“We’re not going to focus on the prize, there’s still a long way to go this season and the field is very competitive. We’ll take each round as it comes and look to maximise our points every time we hit the track,” he said.
“Massive thanks to DJR and Shell V Power for the opportunity that’s on offer though, it’s an incredible incentive and it’s amazing to see the support that exists for Formula Ford.”
Last weekend’s state event at Phillip Island was hampered by torrential downpours that came and went throughout the weekend, often impacting the Formula Ford races, however this weekend’s forecast looks much brighter.
“It’s looking like a nice weekend to go racing, no more crazy rain like we had last week so I’m looking forward to some good pure racing around a fun track,” Sargent concluded.
Round two of the Australian Formula Ford Championship takes places from May 21-23 at Wakefield Park as part of round three of the Motorsport Australia NSW State Championships.
