Tom Sargent is aiming to increase his points lead in the NSW Formula Ford Championship when he returns to Sydney Motorsport Park for Round 2 this Sunday.
The Young driver had been planning an all-out assault on the national Formula Ford series after his strong run to third in the 2019 standings, but when the series was cancelled due to the impossibility of interstate travel amidst the COVID-19 border closures, Sargent and his CHE Racing Team turned their attention to the state competition.
In August’s opening round, Sargent won all three races but is expecting stiff opposition this weekend.
“The quality of talent in the state series is very impressive, there are some seriously good drivers,” Sargent said.
“Yes, we won all the races in the last round, but all our rivals will have gone away, analysed the weekend and made some gains. It’s vital that we keep improving, to ensure we stay at the head of the pack.
“While it’s not quite as cut-throat as the national series, the state scene is still fiercely competitive and it’s the ideal environment for us to keep developing the car and my driving so we can hit the ground running when the national series resumes in 2021.”
As with the previous round, this weekend’s event will see qualifying and three races all held on Sunday. Sargent said the tight turnaround between sessions will keep the team on their toes.
“There’s not much time in between each session, so there will be some pressure on the crew if we need to make any changes to the car,” he said.
“Fortunately, the CHE Racing Team are well-organised so they will be able to adapt on the run.
“My team-mate, Noah Sands is making his racing debut as well, so I’m looking forward to working with him and helping him through his first race weekend.”
